Where History Comes to Life

Explore historical exhibits and live demonstrations including seeing and smelling coffee beans ground by hand at the Burnaby Lake General Store. Play Mahjong, a Chinese game of strategy, skill, and summation at the Way Sang Yuen Wat Kee herbalist shop. Watch the blacksmith heat and hammer metal objects in Wagner’s Blacksmith Shop. Take a ride on the restored 1912 C.W. Parker Carousel, enjoy a picnic lunch in the meadow or visit a replica Japanese Ofuro (bathhouse), built in 1977 to commemorate the arrival of Burnaby’s first Japanese immigrant in 1877.

Admission is free. Closed for the summer season, but do check our website for seasonal events including "Haunted Village", admission event - Oct 19 -22 and Oct 26 - 29, and "Heritage Christmas" free event.  

Explore our newest exhibit, which was developed in close consultation with the Museum's South Asian Advisory Committee:  Truths Not Often Told: Being South Asian in Burnaby, explores the diverse experience of Burnaby’s South Asian Canadian Communities.  

Plan to enjoy these daily activities:

Scavenger Hunt - Pick up your scavenger hunt at the gates and explore the scents of South Asia through out the Museum site.

Bell’s Basics - at Bell’s Dry Goods  Learn about matching, measuring and patterning fabrics.

Coffee Grinding @ The General Store - See and smell the coffee beans ground by hand.

Cedar Basket @ the Love Farmhouse - Learn about Hazel’s cedar basket.

Ruby’s Lunch @ Seaforth School - What is in Ruby’s lunch? Find out at the schoolhouse.

Blacksmithing @ the Blacksmith Shop - Watch the metalsmith heat and hammer metal objects.

Heritage Games in the Meadow - Check out the hands-on games and toys. Fun for kids and adults!  Tuesdays 1-3pm

Steam Demo in the Steam Shed - Learn about how steam pressure runs machinery.
Wednesdays throughout the day

Butter Making @ the Love Farmhouse - Watch, learn (or churn?) and try butter made from scratch. Thursdays 11:30am – 3:30pm

Mahjong: @ the Herbalist - Participate in this Chinese game of strategy, skill, and summation.
Fridays 1-3pm

Coast Salish Seed Bombs (registered program – register at main entrance - $5) Real Estate
Make a seed bomb with Coast Salish plant seeds. Take it home and place it in your garden.
Saturdays at 11:15am & 2:15pm

Gardner in Residence in the Orchard -Sundays 12-4pm

Hands on Harvest in the Orchard - Sundays (beginning June) 1-2pm
